Pediatric professionals play a crucial role in safe firearm storage education.
Like counseling on seatbelt use, pool safety or securing medications, counseling parents on firearm ownership and safe storage practices for firearms helps mitigate the risk of death and injury to children. Studies have shown that parents and caregivers are receptive to this type of counseling and that parents are more likely to have firearms safely stored after discussing this with their pediatrician.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pediatricians discuss firearms in the context of safe storage and suicide prevention, asking parents about access to guns in the home and educating them about safe storage.
